1. Mula Bandha
  2. Uddiyana Bandha
  3. Jalandhara Bandha

There are three classic bandhas that function at specific energy circuits and are used as valves in conjunction with pratyahara to stop the outward flow of prana while simultaneously directing the internal energy flow to the nadis which activates the energy body. When engaging all three bandhas at the same time it is referred to as Maha Bandha.

Mula Bandha is the root lock and resides at the base of the pelvis, the perineum. It is a diamond shaped hammock that spans the space in- between the pubis bones, the ischium (sit bones) and the coccyx. This area is the pelvic floor and to engage this bandha one contracts this area with a subtle lift.

Uddiyana Bandha  resides within the lower abdomen . To engage this bandha we draw our lower abdomen in and up.

Jalandhara Bandha is the throat lock and is engaged by drawing the chin toward the sternum.  This stimulates the thyroid balancing the regulation of hormones responsible for metabolism.
